Into my fifth year as the organiser of the SPCC Mentor Programme
Career Day, the diversity and success of SPCC alumni never cease
to amaze me. However, what impresses me even more is their
willingness to share their initial struggle, ongoing challenges and,
of course, paths to success, to fellow St. Paulians. At the Career
Day held last September, we had alumni representing professions
ranging from public relations, architecture, design, finance and
scientific research to, naturally, law and medicine, which remain
the top choices among our mentees.
As an organiser of the event, my own biggest struggle has always
been to keep track of time and make sure sessions do not over-
run. This is by no means an easy feat, and sometimes I have to
resort to pretty heavy-handed ways to force speakers out of the
classrooms in order to make way for the next sessions. Despite
that, we often find students and speakers huddle together along
the corridor, continuing to immerse themselves in conversations.
By then, I would be in a dilemma whether to tear them apart or
let them carry on. After all, these exchanges are precisely why we
bring alumni back to school – to guide students into making the
right decisions for themselves about their future.
I could not thank the speakers enough for participating with so
much enthusiasm. For some, spending the morning at SPCC means
giving up half-day practice at clinics, or missing a client meeting.
The Mentor Programme is truly grateful for all your involvement.
I must also compliment our students who play gracious hosts by
being attentive audience to our guest speakers, many of whom
agree to return year after year!
Looking forward to meeting our next batch of mentees in the
coming school year!
