Centenary Open Days OF SPCC and SPCCPS
Thomson Choi (2002)
2015 was a very special year – it marked the Centenary of our
school and provided a perfect reason for alumni, the faculty,
staff and students to have a grand celebration of the history and
legacy of the SPCC education. This year was also special for
me personally with my first daughter born. It was all the more
meaningful as I looked back in my time at SPCC and imagined
what our alumni’s children’s experiences would be while visiting
the old MacDonnell Road campus and exploring the new primary
school campus in Wong Chuk Hang.
The MacDonnell Road secondary school campus is classic as
ever, but with the new (for me at least) LCYM building it has a
modern and energised feeling to it. The school hall, where I’ve
spent countless mornings at assembly and afternoons at various
rehearsals, has become bright and refreshed. Classrooms are now
equipped with lockers and technology to help with education.
With our long and rich history in music, it wouldn’t be an SPCC
Open Day without performances in the Music Room. Students
showcased their talents with a wonderful music programme that
awed visitors. To my surprise, inside the Lecture Hall, there was
a performance of Chinese Martial Arts – a student was waving a
Chinese sword on stage. I realised substantial transformations are
going on in order to let students have a well-rounded education at
my alma mater.
Inside the classrooms, different organisations prepared exhibitions,
and handmade arts and crafts were shown to visitors. Students
happily engaged in conversations with parents and alumni to
explain their work and present the crafts of which many visitors
could take home.
Upon my first visit at the Wong Chuk Hang Primary School
campus on its Open Day, I was amazed by the beauty and
function of the architecture. The campus is incredibly spacious
and well-equipped with a sportsground and even an indoor pool.
Aside from the hardware, the most memorable experience from
this visit was my conversations with teachers who taught me 20
years ago. As I learned from Ms Cheung and Ms Chung, alumni
from all classes had been testing their memories with questions
of “Do you remember me?” When I posed that question to them
both, they answered without much hesitation, and we reminisced
about the past times at the old AM primary school campus on
MacDonnell Road. This is how deeply our teachers care about
each student personally and devote themselves to giving students
the best education by any standards. I felt treasured as a student
and an alumnus and felt very proud to be a St. Paulian.
Open Days were great occasions for us to reconnect with our
beloved school, teachers, fellow alumni and current students.
It created a spark to encourage alumni to reignite their fond
memories and keep up with the school spirit. Alumni are also
encouraged to contribute back to the community and continue to
build the SPCC legacy.
