SPCCAA 35
Table Tennis Tournament – Class of 1989
黃泰來
(1989)
For the third year in a row, the 89ers entered the annual SPCCAA
Table Tennis Tournament with a boys’ team; and for the very
first time ever, we also have a girls’ team playing. An interesting
observation was that although we were all classmates in primary
school, the PM class was much better represented with 11 players
while there were only four from the AM class. We reminisced
the days when we rushed from the classroom to fight for a table
during recess at the old primary school building. The location
where the tables were placed is now replaced by the secondary
school canteen.
Initially it took some serious cajoling to convince the girls to
participate as most claimed they had not played since our primary
school days. Yet after a few weeks of intense practice and last-
minute brush up of the rules, spirit was high on the day even
though we knew our opponents were post-millennials!
The boys were determined to do better than last year after losing
in the finals against a strong 1990 team, who also happened to be
the inaugural champion the year before. The 89ers B-team was
drawn to play against our nemesis in the group stages, while our
A-team had opponents of graduates from year 1970 to 2013.
The A-team won all but one of the group matches, yet that was
not enough to get us into the final this time. The only defeat was
against 2013, who won all their group matches, and were the
eventual champion.
Similarly, there were no shocking results to brag about with our
girls’ team. The youngsters were simply too good and won all
matches! Well before the final match was played, girls from all the
different teams had already formed a circle on the floor, mingling
and sharing food – doing what girls do best! But isn’t this kind of
socialising and interaction between alumni exactly what the SPCC
family is all about?
To celebrate the Centenary, we decided to order a special team
uniform. It was extremely well-received and would have won us
the best-dressed award, if there had been one. Though we did not
win any trophy this year, the team spirit was strong and the 89ers
will definitely be back again next year!
