Happy 16
th
Anniversary
Howard Wong (2004), Jessica Lau (2004)
How unspeakably the lengthening of memories in common endears our old friends – especially
having the honour of the presence of our former principal, Mr Henry Poon (1962) in our
special dinner on a Friday night!
Tracing back, it was the 16
th
anniversary since Mr Poon became principal at SPCC, and
coincidently, that was the year when we were in Form One, all fresh to the exciting environment
of the school. In the blink of an eye, we were then Form Five graduates preparing to pursue our
further studies in the A-Levels when Mr Poon retired. It had been another 10 years before we
were able to gather together with him again in this mini reunion! Time flies but it seems just like
yesterday when we were attending morning assembly while Mr Poon delivered his daily speech
on the virtues and lessons of life. We really miss those moments! It was therefore splendid to
learn about Mr Poon’s new year plan of publishing his collection of precious speeches into a
book!
While indulging ourselves in the scrumptious dinner and exchanging conversation regarding our
recent state of affairs, we were amazed that Mr Poon was able to remember our names as well
as our specialties. Moreover, we had great joy and pleasure in sharing our reminiscence of our
memories back at school and to our surprise, Mr Poon could remember most of those events.
Throughout these years, Mr Poon continued to be actively involved in the education sector,
from starting up Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Lee Shau Kee College to working
in education committees and task forces. We are inspired by Mr Poon’s devotion and passion
towards educating the youth. Mr Poon also informed us that he had been practising Chinese
calligraphy and showed us some of his works, including phrases and teachings from the Bible.
The climax of the night came when Mr Poon offered to sing the song “
憑着愛
”, which is his
favourite song amongst Cantonese pop music and correlates with our school motto, “Faith,
Hope and Love”.
Our dinner ended after each of us had received a souvenir from Mr Poon, combining a photo of
him taken at the school's Centenary Dinner, wearing the school tie and kicking the “watermelon
football”, and his Chinese calligraphy work with Chinese New Year blessings. Mr Poon was
also very kind to have signed and written words of wisdom and encouragement at the back of
it. It was indeed a very memorable night and without doubt, this would become part and parcel
of our collective memories for years to come.
